The Georgia Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc. (GA-COPS) is a
501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. We are a statewide chapter of an
international organization named Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc., founded
in 1984, which has 49 chapters in the United States and 1 in the United Kingdom.
The Georgia chapter was chartered on November 16, 1996 and is a statewide
organization, registered with the Secretary of State's Office.
We are an all volunteer organization with no
officers or members receiving any salary compensation. The chapter serves as a state
wide support group for surviving families, friends and co-workers
of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty as determined by
Federal criteria. Furthermore, GA-COPS is a resource to law
enforcement agencies whenever they experience a line of duty death.
The agencies are informed of the existence and purpose of GA-COPS in an
effort for them to better assist their survivors and employees.
At the time of a line of duty death, the chapter
sends flowers, is present at visitation services and attends the funerals of
the officer. Line of duty death packages consisting of where and how
to submit and apply for survivor benefits, grief material and programs
sponsored by COPS is mailed to the spouse, or beneficiary and the agency
that lost the deceased officer.
